“As a jealous person, I’m interested in building love and trust with people that does not hinge on sexual exclusivity, because part of my jealousy, and maybe part of the jealously implied in the cultural drama repeatedly portrayed on TV of “The Other Woman,” “The Affair” and the heartcrushing trust-violating meaning placed on sex outside a relationship, is that desire always exceeds any container—and we all know that from experiencing our own desire. No matter how much we love and want and adore and are hot for our partners, we also experience desire outside that dyad, and the myth of romance (one person out there for each of us, find them, love them, buy things with them and you’ll be happy forever), which we’re all drilled with from birth ’til death, makes this knowledge terribly threatening. So the point, for me, becomes recognizing that commitment and love and interest in someone else’s well being does not necessarily include a deadening of all sexual desire for other people, or trying to unlearn the belief that it does. The point for me is to create relationships based on deeper and more real notions of trust. So that love becomes defined not by sexual exclusivity, but by actual respect, concern, commitment to act with kind intentions, accountability for our actions, and a desire for mutual growth.”

“Feminism has shaped the society we live in. But just how far has it brought us, and how relevant is it today? This feature documentary zeroes in on key concerns such as violence against women, access to abortion, and universal childcare, asking how much progress we have truly made on these issues. Rich with archival material and startling contemporary stories, Status Quo? uncovers answers that are provocative and at times shocking.

i’m screening this in my living room tomorrow - if you’re in quebec city, be there.

Emad Burnat and his wife Soraya representing Palestine (Nominated for ‘5 Broken Cameras’) at the Oscars. Soraya is wearing a traditional Palestinian Thob.

They were also completely disrespected by US customs officials and detained in complete isolation for several hours, where they was treated like dirt and told they was going to be deported back to Palestine. He even showed them the invitation to the ceremony, but they didn’t believe him. Eventually he contacted Michael Moore, who got help and got him released. Read about it.
I just wanted to note that as a reminder that even people nominated for Oscars get treated that way. Unsurprising, unfortunately, and utterly disgusting.

“Migration Is Beautiful” was just released by Voice of Art this week! The short 3-part documentary follows me and many other pro-migrant artists as we go to Tucson and Charlotte to combat anti-migrant hate with art. It also shows shines light on some of the worst migration policies in the country and what the community is doing to fight them back.

This documentary wouldn’t have been possible with the amazing artists and activists who are featured in the documentary. From the artwork of Melanie Cervantes, Jesus Barraza and Julio Salgado to Pulitzer-prize winner Jose Antonio Vargas and the UndocuBus bus riders, this documentary shows the power of cultural and community organizing.
